the proposed building was not consonant with the
dignity of the Governor of the Colony and did not
compare favourably with bungalows in the same neighbourhood provided for the country use of the representatives of certain leading mercantile firms.
It was urged that a suitable country residence for the
Governor could not be erected for less than $100,000 and
some members considered even this sum inadequate. I
feel that the question of the size and design of the
bungalow should stand over for Sir William Peel's personal
consideration, but I have, subject to your approval,
inserted a sum of $100,000 provisionally in the draft
Estimates as the cost of the bungalow of which $50,000
is inserted for expenditure in 1933.
6. I understand that this matter has already been
mentioned by Sir William Peel at the Colonial Office
and if the scheme favoured by the unofficial members of
Legislative Council meets with your approval I shall be
glad to receive authority for the erection of the
bungalow to be undertaken next year after Sir William
has had an opportunity to consider the unofficial members'
views.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient, humble servant,
M.D. Southoch
Officer Administering the Government.
